But Dodds didn't want to deal with payment plans or leases - and he had the cash. So he wrote Akeena Solar a $20,000 check, and installers snapped the system together in January. Akeena also partners with other companies to offer power purchase agreements. Thirty days later, a $6,000 rebate check from the city and state arrived in his mailbox. He was also planning on taking a 30% tax credit on his federal taxes to further reduce cost.

It was a good choice for him: With monthly presolar electric bills of around $150 a month, he doesn't use enough electricity to make one of the other financing or lease options profitable.

Last month, he had an $11 credit with PG&E
